How to download subtitles: YouTube, meWATCH and the streaming apps
YouTube subtitles can be saved as a file in seconds. Streaming apps keep theirs locked inside the app. What works where, for viewers in Singapore.
"How do I download the subtitles?" has a different answer depending on where the video lives. For YouTube it takes a few seconds. For the streaming services most households in Singapore pay for, the honest answer is that you cannot — but you can usually get what you actually wanted another way.
YouTube: yes, in seconds
Trailers, clips, interviews, lectures and most other YouTube videos carry caption tracks, and a YouTube subtitle downloader saves them as a file:
- Copy the video's link from the address bar or the Share button.
- Paste it into the downloader.
- Choose the language — the menu lists every track the video has, often English plus Simplified Chinese on Singapore uploads.
- Pick a format and download.

meWATCH, Netflix, Disney+ and the rest: not as a file
The subscription services show subtitles inside their own players and do not offer them as downloads. Even when an app lets you download an episode to watch offline, the subtitles travel with it inside the app — there is no file you can open elsewhere. That is by design, and it is the same on every service.
What you usually wanted can still be done:
- Subtitles in a different language? Change the track in the app's audio and subtitle menu; most services here carry English and Simplified Chinese on much of their catalogue.
- Subtitles on a flight? Download the episode in the app before you go; the subtitle tracks come with it.
- Text to study from? Look for the official trailer or clips on YouTube, which usually have the same dialogue with captions you can download.

A word on subtitle websites
Search for a film's subtitles and you will find sites offering files for almost anything. Be careful. Many are thick with misleading download buttons and ads that lead to malware; the files are often timed for a different cut of the film, so they drift out of sync; and a subtitle file for a commercial film is someone's translation, shared without the rights-holder's say. For anything on a streaming service, the service's own subtitles are the ones to use.
