English subtitles in Singapore, in cinemas and online
Singapore subtitles more heavily than almost anywhere, but the streaming services are less consistent than the cinemas. What to check.
Singapore cinemas subtitle in English as a matter of course — Chinese-language films almost always carry English subtitles, and the practice is near-universal across Golden Village, Shaw and Cathay. Streaming is where it gets inconsistent, and that catches people out.
In cinemas
Assume English subtitles are present on a Chinese-language release and you will be right nearly every time. The convention is strong enough that their absence is the thing worth checking, not their presence.
The exceptions are worth knowing: some Malay and Tamil releases carry English subtitles inconsistently, and special event screenings, film festivals and one-off programming at The Projector may run a print without them. Festival listings normally say so explicitly.

On streaming
Less reliable, and the gap surprises people. A film that was subtitled in English at Golden Village may reach a streaming service without an English track, because the cinema subtitles and the streaming subtitles are separately produced and separately licensed.

Check before you pay for a rental
A rental is not refundable once you start it, so the subtitle tracks are worth checking on the store page first. This is the single most common way people lose money on a digital rental in Singapore.
