Watching films cheaply in Singapore
Free services that are genuinely free, why a rental usually beats a subscription, and the cinema tricks that cost less than streaming.
The cheapest legitimate way to watch a specific film in Singapore is usually to rent it, not to subscribe to anything. The cheapest way to watch films in general is meWATCH plus a library membership, both free. Everything else is a question of not paying for the same thing twice.
The genuinely free options
meWATCH is free and ad-supported, and carries all four Mediacorp channels. The National Library Board lends film through its digital services on an ordinary NLB membership, which is free to Singaporeans and permanent residents and is the most underused option in the country. Several paid services also run free ad-supported tiers, Viu's being the most usable.

Why renting usually wins
Most people subscribe for one title and then keep paying. A rental on Prime Video costs a fraction of a month and, more importantly, does not renew. If you can name the one film you want, rent it.
The exception is a household that watches several hours a week across many titles, where a subscription is straightforwardly better value. The test is whether you can name what you will watch next after the thing you signed up for.

The cinema is often cheaper than you think
A weekday matinee at Golden Village, Shaw or Cathay costs meaningfully less than an evening or weekend seat, and off-peak pricing is the single biggest lever on what a cinema ticket costs in Singapore. If you were going to pay for a month of streaming to watch one film, a matinee may cost less and it is the version the film was made for.
